In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) Treatment

IVF, once a revolutionary breakthrough, is now a widely accessible solution helping thousands of couples conceive each year. At Acorn Fertility, we offer expert IVF treatment which is the most value for money and provided as a “fixed price package” so you have peace of mind.

When is IVF Needed?

IVF can address various fertility issues by facilitating fertilisation outside the body and selecting the best embryos for transfer. It can help overcome:

  • Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes
  • Low sperm quality or quantity
  • Hostile cervical environments
  • Age-related fertility decline
  • Physical disabilities preventing normal intercourse

Consideration for IVF Treatment

How is IVF Performed?

Ovarian stimulation IVF treatment begins around the fist day of your menstrual cycle and involves several stages. All consultations and scans are conveniently conducted at our clinic.  The following are the key steps in the process

  • Stimulating the Ovaries: Injections are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. We hope to produce enough eggs but not too many to avoid any risk to your health
  • Monitoring of growing ovarian follicles (eggs are present in follicles)  are monitored using ultrasound scans.
  • Egg Collection: Performed at our HFEA licensed clinic in Colliers Wood, London, eggs are collected using a needle attached to a vaginal ultra-sound probe. It does not hurt you as you are well sedated. The procedure lasts less than 20 minutes.
  • Combining Eggs and Sperm: The collected eggs are combined with prepared sperm and left overnight to fertilise in an incubator.
  • Growing the Fertilised Eggs: Fertilised eggs (zygotes) grow in a culture medium for about five days until they reach the ‘blastocyst’ stage.
  • Embryo Transfer: The highest quality embryo is selected and transferred to the uterus using a thin vaginal catheter inserted through the cervix, under ultra-sound scan monitoring.
  • Freezing Unused Embryos: Healthy embryos not used immediately can be frozen for future use, eliminating the need for repeated full IVF cycles.

IVF Success Rates

IVF success rates depend on age. In general, younger you are and better is your “fertility-reserve”, more likely you are to succeed in falling pregnant. Any pregnancy has a risk of miscarriage (about 10-15%) so the “take home baby” rate is always lesser than “clinical pregnancy” rate (defined as fetal heart seen in the 6 week embryo).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Q1. What is IVF and how does it work?

Ans:

IVF is a fertility treatment where eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a lab to create embryos. The best-quality embryo(s) are then transferred into the uterus for implantation.

IVF can be used with the couple’s own eggs and sperm, or with donor eggs or sperm, depending on the circumstances.

Q2. Who are the typical patients having IVF r?

Ans:

IVF was invented primarily for treatment of women with blocked Fallopian tubes however, is proved helpful even to women with other problems such as ovulation disorders, endometriosis, or unexplained infertility.

After the invention of ICSI in the early 1990s, IVF (with ICSI) turned a game-changer in the management of couples with male factor.

About 1 in 5 women having IVF for “unexplained infertility” which basically means nothing abnormal could be found during tests.

Q3. What is the success rate of IVF?

Ans: Success rates vary based on factors like the woman’s age, egg quality, and specific fertility issues. On average, IVF success rates range from 20% to 40% per cycle for women under 35.

Success rates typically decrease with age, with women over 40 having around a 10% success rate per cycle. The use of donor eggs can improve success rates for older women.

Q4. What does the IVF process involve?

Ans: The IVF process includes several stages: ovarian stimulation using fertility drugs (12-14 days), egg retrieval (under sedation and vaginal ultrasound scan guiding the egg collecting needle), fertilization in the lab, embryo culture (3-5 days), and finally embryo transfer (takes 15 minutes typically on the 6th day after egg collection). The entire process typically takes about 4 weeks, followed by a 10 days wait before taking a pregnancy test. In some cases, additional procedures like Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may be used to assist fertilization, but that does not cost you any more time.

Q5. Are there any risks or side effects associated with IVF?

Ans:

While IVF is generally safe, there are risks, including ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) from fertility drugs, multiple pregnancies (typically if more than one embryo is transferred), and a small risk of infection or bleeding from the egg retrieval procedure.

Emotional stress is also common during IVF, and counseling support is often recommended.
